LOCAL OBITUAHY NOTICES. "ALLTUD EIF10N." Mr. Robert Isaac Jones ("Alltud Eifion"), the oldest bard in Wales, died suddenly late on Tuesday night, aged 92. He was a manu- facturing druggist and chemist by profes-1 sion. Mr. Jones, who was generally called by his bardic title, lived at Tremadoc, South Carnarvonshire. His zeal as an eieteddfodwr was remarkable. He was present at the last Welsh National Eisteddfod at Rhyl, was a distinguished antiquarian, and publisher of many works on Welsh folk-lore, the moot popular of which was "Y Brython" ("The Briton"), edited by the late Chancellor Sil- van Evans. He was a devoted Churchman, and was churchwarden for many years, and was at a service a few days ago. Death was due to bronchitis. MR. RICHARD HUMPHREYS, TONDU. The funeral of Mr. Richard Humphreys, 31 years schoolmaster at Tondu, was held on Saturday, being attended by hundreds of people from Tondu, Aberkenfig, Bridgend, and the valleys, including a large number of fellow guardians and district councillors and most of the headmasters of schools in the: neighbourhood. The Rev. J. Sharp conducted the service in the Wesleya-n Chapel, and an impressive address was given by the Rev. J. Etchells (Bridgend). The interment was made in Llan £ a.ntE:r-aed Churchyard. MR. J. BROWNSCOMBE, NEWPORT. Mr. John Brownscombe, builder, of Newport, died, after an illness of two months, on Mon- day, at his residence 13. York-place, at the age of 58. He was a native of Appledore, North Devon, but settled at Newport more than 30 years ago, and became a successful builder. One of his sons, the Rev. Edwin Brownscombe, a Weeleyan missionary on the West Coast of Africa, was the means of the conversion to Christianity of the Ala-ke. MR. H. S. WOWEN. Mr. H. S. Bowen, of Little Haven, Pem- broke, died on Tuesday, the immediate cause of death being an absoees on the brain. Mr. Bowen was a nephew of Bishop John I Bowen, of Siein-a Leone, who died in 1860, and of tiie Messrs. Bowen, well known for their philanthropic work. A cousin of his is Mr. Bowen Oooke, chief .4' the engineering staff at Crewe; and anotlalr cousin is Dr. Cooke, medical officer Qt. Neyland. He was of a quiet, retiring disinsection. He was a. churchwarden at Waltot. Vfcest Church, but he took no part in pubw-c ljfe. Of indepen- dent means, he had no profession, but in private he was highly veepec-ted. He was about 45 years of age. REV. DAVID EVANS, BLAENCONTN. The Rev. David Evans, Baptist minister, of Blaenconin, Pembroke, passed away at his resaidenoe, Station-terrace, Clynderwen. MR. G. GASCOIGNE HAWKES, LATE OF SWANSEA. News has been received at Swansea of the death of Mr. G. Gasooigiie Rawkes, solicitor, who up to a year or t«-o ago practised at Swansea and Neath. WELSH COAL FOR THE WAR The returns for the month of February show that the coal shipped from Oardiff during February to the Far East aggregated 89,765 tons. The bulk of this was shipped in the first half of the month, and since then the cargoes despatched have been very few, and the trade has practically ceased for the time being. Both Japan and Russia appear to have covered their requirements for some time, Japan not only having the coal pur- chased, but also about 60,000 tone, or, perhaps, more, captured. The only inquiries in the market at the present time from Russia are in respect of the order for Baltic naval ports usually placed at this period, the bulk of which is generally given to North of EnglaQd coal exporters. THE TEACHING OF WELSH At a. meeting of the Mountain Ash Educa- Lion Committee on Tuesday the Chairman (Mr. D. Rogers) propoeed a resolution that the teaching of Welsh should be made more efficient, and he Quoted the words of Mr. W. Edwards, his Majesty's inspector, that the Welsh language had a great struggle to exist.—Captain F. N. Gray observed tha.t it would be well if a committee were appointed so oorusider whether it was worth while teaching Welsh at aJl. He believed it to be a waste of time, which could be more pro- fitably employed in teaching French or Ger- man. Mr. E. T. Williams: I ha.e no doubt that If Captain Gray were taught the rudiments of the Welsh language he would become a convert to our view in less than three months. He ha.s no idea, of the beauty of our language.
