j GLAMORGAN COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS. LIST OF CANDIDATES. Monday was the last day for receiving nomina- tious in connection with the election of County Councill, rs for Glamorganshire, Carmarthen- shire, Monmouthshire, and Pembrokeshire. A list of th--G1 im jrganshire candidates nominated we append b»;iow. Tiiere will be comparatively few c contested elections, the number of unopposed returns beiag extraordinarily inrge, especially in Carmar- thenshire, Monmouthshire, ana Pembrokeshire. It was thought a few wt-eks ago that we should have several contested elections in this district, but it is evident the electors are satisfied with the represen- tative they had already elected, and are prepared to leave the affairs of the County in their bunds, assured they will be well and faithfully de-It with. There are few things more deplorable and more to be regretted than that ratepayers should manfef, a like- interest in the constitution of public govern- ing bodies. Th:s inactivity and lethargy adtuinistra- tive is most unhealthy. It is conducive to carlessness on the part of the gentlemen entrusted to disoharge public b.i^inesg. and is bonud to prove detrimental round. We d-precate this lack of interest among the ratepayers ia matters which so clossly uffect their interests, and we also deprecate the un- necessary caat;on of contested elections. If a menibt,r is found to be able to look after the affairs of a parish or Couaty, tind to have the interests of bis cocst;tueuts thoroughly at hear', it is most un. fair thar he should be pur, to the expense and worry of a content, especially if only at the i)tStigntion of a small minority of the people. It is gratifying to find that the constitution of the Glamorgan County Council is such toat the general body of tlie electors desire but few changes—that they are content to allow their airesdy elected represen- tatives to continue to serve them in the future as in the past. Iu one or two districts, however, there are contests, and tne)r progress is being watched with a keen inteies- by other parts of the County. Tue election for the representation of the Gowwr division is exciting unusual interest. The retiring candidate, M.. F. Cory Yeo, is opposed by Mr. W. Rees, and the fight is being svaged with much spirit ud energy on botn hides. On Monday evening Mr. Yeo held a very successful meeting at Penclawdd, when a vote of confidence in him was passed with enthusiasm. By the retirement of Mr. Thos. Peuriee, J.P., Kilvrougb, the Oyster. Bjouth Division will be represented by Sir John Jones JeakinF, Knight, tae Grange. The people of Mumbles are delighted with their choice. They say that no better man thaa Sir John could be found to watch over their interests, which are so closely identical with his own. Sir Johu Jones Jenkins is undoubtedly a man of exceptionally high business qualities, while his experience in pat.lic administration is large and varied, and will stand him in good stead on the Council to which he h*s been elected. Sir John is greatly interested in the Mumbles, and Will feel sure the district will gain much hy choosing so able and experienced a repre- seatative. JVlr. L. Rue Daaiel, (High Sheriff of Glamorganshire) returns to tee County Council unopposed. Mr. D.iniel has rendered invaluable survicws to the town and district of Swansea he is very popular, anu ilis rare business qualifications and LIng experieice in (Jeliberativ0 tidrmmstrative business is such that Loughor and Pendtrry ought to feel proud at having mm as their representative. Sir H. Uussey Tivian. B..tt, M.P., it. without a doubt, one of the most astute men of business in this County, while his ability as an administrator of public affairs is of a high order. As Chairman of the Glamorgan County Council he has proved himself to be a man of resource, of keen perceptive powers, and by his geniality has made himself very popular. The electors of Tirdeunaw have ouly none what the County Council will probably do — re-elect the worthy baronet Cuairmau. ilomston is a large and important district, with interests which need to be closely waiched. In IIIr. Will. Williams, of lUaesygwei net;, Mori Etonians have a representative who has proved himself to be deeply concerned in their oehali, and in the Cuuuty gectraiiy. They have very wisely rt-elected hiui to a seat on the Council, and we feel sure Mr. Williams will do his duty in the fuiure as be has in the past. His vast interests rtquue as careful watching as those cf the ratepayers, for Loth aie closely beund up with the other. Appen ded is a list of the candidates nominated:— GLAMOBG ANSHIRE.
